View Full Version : OS X on mini notebooks?

Has anyone tried putting OS X on one of these mini notebooks? If so, how is the performance?

I haven't tried it yet, but it should run fine performance wise... the mini-mac has a 1.4 GHz processor and 512MB RAM so it should be ok with a 1.6GHz Atom CPU and 1GB RAM... in the past my only problem has been getting drivers for the audio and NIC card... but that varies by device.

There's another thread on this somewhere, but I honestly don't get the point. Why not just go with a full Linux instead of OS X if that's what you want to do?

(Admittedly I've never liked the Mac OS, though its a million times better than it used to be.)

Isn't Linux much more complicated that OSX?

Isn't Linux much more complicated that OSX?

Depends on the distro. Usually no.

The EEE distro was so easy to use, thats why it was aimed at children, i think there was a more advanced version avaliable.
But i didnt want something like that so i installed Xp because i wanted the usablilty and something i was used to rather than a steep learning curve.

I personally haven't done this, but it seems like people are pretty satisfied. although some people will sacrifice anything as long as they don't stray too far from their mac os.

How well does OS X run on these anyway, have they said it was clunky or anything? Just curious compared to XP or Vista installed on it.

I heard the new leopard is very slow on he eee pc, it may be faster on the msi wind im sure someone will try it out, the hyperthreading will help.

I heard the new leopard is very slow on he eee pc, it may be faster on the msi wind im sure someone will try it out, the hyperthreading will help.

The eee pc's Celeron if set to the same clock speed as an Atom, is double the performance. So, since the Celeron is 900MHz in the eee, and the Atom is 1.6GHz, the Celeron will in all likelyhood be just a little faster.

I thought the atom compared 900mhz vs 1.6ghz was 10% faster + hyperthreading.

On this benchmark, they underclocked the Atom to 1.3GHz for a direct comparison to the 1.3GHz Celeron-M.

The Celeron-M was 2.3 times faster.

With hyperthreading turned on, the Celeron was only 1.5 times faster. So, what thats saying is with the clocks the same, the Celeron is 1.5-2.3 times faster than the Atom.

The Atom however, has 1.2 times the clock-speed, so at its native clock:
http://media.bestofmicro.com/C/V/108031/original/image013.png

So, at best, the 1.3GHz Celeron will be 1.21 times faster than the 1.6GHz Atom, and at worst, the Celeron will be 1.86 times faster than the 1.6GHz Atom.

Edit: Oops, apparently the clock speed is set to 1.3GHz for both chips in this benchmark, so I had to fix things.

I guess thats not too bad for a processor which sucks up less power and less heat.

See above, I made a mistake and am correcting the math.

Assuming the Celeron is linear, at 900MHz, it will score 712. This would mean that at best, the Wind's Atom CPU would be score 1.2 times the eee's Celeron, and at worst, the eee's Celeron would be 1.3 times the Wind's Atom.

However, all that said, the one biggest thing to keep in mind is that Cinebench is a synthetic benchmark and who knows how that'll translate to real-world performance.

Oh yes.. I did try.. actually in 3-boot to VISTA, OSX and UBUNTU on my FUJITSU U810.. See video below:

You don't have the video set to private or anything do you? That would be one reason :)

The OSX boot seems kinda slow but you probably have a newer version than I do and your triple booting on a U810. but which one do you use? Should I use OSX, Ubuntu or both?:yay:

i'd tripple boot winXP, osX and ubuntu for netbooks.. and in 2009 maybe hp's linux called mobile internet experience

I am just barely missing windows... Few program

I am running a dual boot Ubuntu 8.10 and osx 10.5.5 on my MSI Wind, 1.6 atom

Each operating systems have lag in different areas, but all in all that is expected on such a low powered CPU!

Hi Sull, nice to see you here... Im just planning to 3boot the U820 same as my old U810. Just undecided which OSX to use. Iatkos might work since my acer and U2010 are having same CPU.. What do you think?

Hi Chris,

I am not very familar with all the hacked distris of osx, just give it a shot :)

A user at the wind forum made a custom disc for my MSI Wind :)

FWIW, I'm posting this from my lil' black beauty, Dell Mini9 Hackintosh running Leopard 10.5.8 and works great!

I put 2GB RAM and a 64GB SSD RunCore in it and is quite fast...very quick boot up and shutdown too...everything works well, per chart on BoingBoing site Mini9 is probably the best Hackintosh candidate as it has the closest hardware feature set it seems...

I even installed ParallelsDesktop3 with XP and it works quite well too, just take a few minutes to boot up completely, but then works great...

:yay:

Been using a lenovo S10 with 2 gig ram running OS X leopard. Only the Ethernet port is not working. All the other ports are functioning well. Been satisfied with its performance so far.
