Well, that helps narrow down the field at least. :D

Yeah you can mark this system off the UMPC's to decide between :)

With it's ugly two tone stylings the Aspire One was off my list ages ago, gut instincts win again!

I didn't completely HATE the design but this just writes epic fail on it now.

Oh, it was epic fail as soon as the word Acer was involved.

lol I like some of Acer's tablet pc's they made but yeah with so many companies trying to get into the umpc market this year I wasn't expecting much. Not having upgradeable options is a huge mistake though.

I eyeballed the Aspire One when I heard the 6 Cell Winds were going to be scarce. I thought maybe a minimalist mini-notebook might work. I thought the 512K RAM limit was just too little.

well to slightly correct you it's 512 megabytes not "K" kilobytes :) But it is a pretty low amount, if you could upgrade it it wouldn't be a big deal.

Plus what advantages would they really have in both soldering it and limiting it to 512MB of RAM? I understand soldered parts are cheaper to manufacture but 1GB of RAM isn't that much more expensive, especially when it's going to lose all those sales of people who would've wanted the extra RAM. So shortsighted Acer. :boo:

Maybe they will revise this at launch, or make more options available. If they do it right and offer a 1GB model for +£20 or 2GB for +£50 then they retain control over quality and everyone wins.

Yeah has it been completely 100% confirmed that it's soldered and non-upgradable or was it only mentioned on a single website or something?

Wouldnt surprise me the thing is so cheap.

Well the estimated price I read was $399, which is comparable to the Wind and other systems so I don't think it's "so cheap". :P

I know everyone has said it is soldered, but look at the to bottom pictures of this set;

Shows a Sodimm.

Edit: Now I feel stupid. Looking at it again, it looks like that might be chips for the SSD, but I thought this was the RAM.

I found a better closeup of the other side and it appears that THIS is the RAM in the center.

This is false. There are two slots, one is not accessible, one is. The maximum capacity is 1.5g because by default you'll have 512 in the hidden slot and 512 in available slot if you purchase a 1g model. So you can switch the available one to a gig stick and exceed its limits.
