Google vLite and download it. Pop in your Vista DVD and let vLite do the rest for you. Once it's done remove everything that you don't see on this list. I confirm that this works on the EEE 701 and it fits perfectly on a 4G SSD.
![]() If you have a webcam and want to use it leave Image Acquisition on. This will make VISTA Home Basic run as fast as XP, maybe faster on your UMPC |

I assume that you have this installed. Whats the memory footprint of this smaller version of Vista?

I'd like to know as well this looks pretty interesting
I wouldn't think it'd be faster than a stripped down version of XP though right?

This looks pretty interesting, is it more efficient that a full installation of vista, which for me currently uses 1.5 gigs easy...
i don't currently own a umpc, but am in the market for one and definitely would like to have vista run better on my asus g1s-b2. |

Well, it really depends on how much you remove. And you have to be careful, because some things could mess up your install anyway and you'll have to do it over again.

Yeah if you plan on using a certain feature and you take it out you're screwed. I like how it says "choose wisely" lol

Another option to stripping down the entire install is to go through and do some optimizing of your existing OS. Came across an article a while back recommending some ways to speed up Vista on UMPCs: http://www.umpcportal.com/2007/06/696/
Doing so takes a lot of the shine factor away from Vista, but the performance is night and day on my piddly like 800MHz A110. |

FWIW, one of the best Windows tweak sites I've found is BlackViper's....
Has lots of info and details about XP, Vista, etc...and tweak guides... Check it out at blackviper.com

Great site to assist this is http://www.speedyvista.com/services.html
This lists every service in Vista and gives suggestions about which you can usually disable, for lower resource hogging by Vista. I made a disc that ripped out tons of stuff, got the install disc down to 761 MB, with Windows when installed down to about 4 GB (which is very good for Vista), and its now only using about 25-30% of RAM when idle in a virtual machine. Not bad, really. Last edited by jhoff80; 06-27-2008 at 07:38 AM. |

I usually turn off aero in vista and tweak some other settings to make it faster.

Actually from what I've read, turning off Aero doesn't always help. It depends on your video card, since Aero offloads desktop composition from the CPU to the video card if possible.
